Some car brands store digital car keys in Apple Wallet. These car keys can interfere with your Welcome Access building card and prevent Express Mode (tap-and-go) from working correctly at door readers.
Affected car brands
BMW
Audi
Other brands that support Apple Wallet car keys may also be affected.
Symptoms
Express Mode does not work: you have to manually open Wallet and select your access card instead of just holding your phone to the reader.
The door reader blinks red or does not respond when you tap your phone, even though the card is in your Wallet.
The card works normally on some readers but not others.
Why this happens
When multiple NFC credentials are stored in Apple Wallet (access cards, car keys, payment cards), the phone may present the wrong credential to the door reader. Car keys are particularly problematic because they use a similar NFC protocol. This issue is primarily seen with WaveLynx and STid readers.
What you can do
Try setting a payment card as your Express Transit card. Some users have resolved the issue by changing the Express Mode priority. Open Wallet → tap your Welcome Access card → tap ... → verify Express Mode is on. Then check that your car key is not set as the default Express card.
Temporarily remove the car key from Wallet. If the access card works after removing the car key, the conflict is confirmed. You can re-add the car key afterward, but Express Mode for building access may stop working again.
Use the Welcome Access app directly. As a workaround, you can open the Welcome Access app and use Bluetooth access instead of NFC tap-and-go.
