Background
Android smartphones, such as Google Pixel smartphones, are always among the first to receive major Android updates. While this means Pixel users get new features early, it also means they can encounter launch bugs that haven't yet been fixed. We have observed this with Android 16+, which can block access card generation in Google Wallet.
To date, we have only seen this issue on Pixel phones — not on Samsung, OnePlus, or other brands.
Possible fixes
Try the steps below in order. Check whether the access card generates after each step before moving on:
1. Check for a software update
Go to Settings
Go to System
Go to Software updates
Check for a new update
Alternatively:
Go to Settings
Go to Security & privacy
Go to System & updates
Install any available updates and restart your phone
2. Toggle Airplane Mode or switch network
Turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then turn it off again. Then try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Some router IPv6 configurations can block Google's update servers, and mobile data can bypass this blocker
3. Change your DNS setting
Go to Settings
Go to Network & internet
Go to Private DNS
Select Custom hostname and type dns.google
Tap Save and try checking for updates again
4. Wait 15–20 minutes
If you have recently cleared your cache, Google's servers may temporarily limit frequent check-in requests. Leave the phone for a few minutes and try again.
5. Clear cache for Google services
Go to Settings
Go to Apps
See all apps
Tap the three dots in the top-right corner and select Show system apps
Find Google Play services, tap Storage & cache, and select Clear cache
Find Google Services Framework, tap Storage & cache, and select Clear cache
Restart your phone and try generating the access card again
6. Clear storage for Google Play services
Note: This will temporarily remove payment cards and other cards from Google Wallet. You will need to re-add them afterwards. Personal data such as photos, apps, and contacts will not be affected.
Go to Google Play services
Go to Storage & cache
Go to Manage space
Clear all data
Restart your phone
7. Use Repair Mode
Go to Settings
Go to System
Go to Repair mode and tap Enter repair mode. The phone will restart in a temporary environment. No data is deleted
Go to Settings
Go to System
Go to Software updates and check for updates
Exit via the notification panel — do not manually restart the phone
8. Reset Google Play Store
Go to Settings
Go to Apps
See all apps and find Google Play Store. Tap the three dots and select Uninstall updates
Go to Storage & cache and select Clear storage.
Restart your phone
Check for updates without opening the Play Store first
9. Force the update via Android Flash Tool (requires a computer)
If none of the above steps work, the update can be pushed via a computer.
Go to Settings
Go to About phone and tap Build number 7 times to unlock Developer options.
Go to Settings
Go to System
Go to Developer options and enable USB debugging.
Connect your phone to a computer with a USB-C cable and open the Android Flash Tool in Google Chrome
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the stable Android 17 build. Personal data is retained
If none of the steps resolve the issue
Wait for Google to push a fix. This can take 48–72 hours, or slightly longer
Switch to a different device. Samsung Galaxy models generally have strong compatibility with the Welcome Access app and are a reliable alternative in the meantime
